- Title
Work and Integrity: The Crisis and Promise of Professionalism in America.
- Authors
Sullivan, William M.
- Abstract
What it means to be a professional in America has changed since the end of World War II. This is a response to changes in the country. Sullivan traces the rise of the cult of the expert, fostered first by government, then universities, and finally by business and then entrepreneurial consultants. The mark of the expert is technology, and that is replacing the culture of service that form erly defined professionalism. Most fellows of the College have lived through the changes Sullivan describes. More than one-quarter of Americans now identify themselves as professionals.
