The three-month old infant contracted gonococcal vulvovaginitis as a result of handling by a father who had gonococcal urethritis. No abnormalities were noted at birth other than minimal meconium staining of the infant. When examined at age three months she was alert, active, and well-nourished. Rectal temperature was 37.9 C. The only pertinent physical findings were mild vulvar erythema and swelling and a green purulent vaginal discharge. She was given a single intramuscular injection of procaine penicillin. At follow-up, one week after therapy, the vulvar inflammation bad subsided and a vaginal culture was negative.
