- Title
An Unusual Case of Sciatica: Salmonella Piriformis Myositis from a Pet Iguana.
- Authors
KRAMER, KENNETH M.
- Abstract
Sciatic symptoms are generally presumed to arise from conditions of the lumbar spine. This report concerns a case of disabling sciatica produced by pelvic irritation of the sciatic nerve from a localized Salmonella abscess of the piriformis muscle, transmitted from a pet iguana. The purpose of the report is to highlight both the need to consider extraspinal causes of sciatica when an obvious lumbar spinal basis is not present, and to be aware of the risk of human salmonellosis posed by household reptiles.
