- Abstract
This article focuses on the life and works of Ferdinand von Hebra, noted dermatologist and the founder of the Vienna School of Dermatology. von Hebra was born on September 7, 1816, in Moravia, Czech Republic and died on August 5, 1880 in Vienna, Austria. The University of Vienna has honored von Hebra by placing a bust in the arcades of the main building of the university in 1891. Upon entering the Vienna General Hospital, von Hebra was provided with dermatologic literature by his teacher, the internist, Joseph Skoda. von Hebra, according to his son-in-law, favored the Willan-Bateman approach in dermatologic studies. In 1845, he had created and published a complex and sophisticated system, fairly similar to present-day ones. By 1860, this was cast into complete shape and filled one entire volume of "Virchow's Handbook of (Special) Pathology." Later it became the "Textbook of Skin Diseases," by von Hebra and M. Kaposi.
