- Abstract
Background: Mental health and psychosocial support for people with cancer is overlooked (Karaytug et al., 2016). Core self-evaluations (CSE) is a psychosocial factor that is significantly associated with health and well-being for people with chronic illness or a disability (Smedema, 2014). Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Core self-evaluations Scale (CSES) and its relationship with life satisfaction, perceived stress, and symptoms of depression and anxiety for people with cancer. Method: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate the validity of the scale. One hundred eighty-six people with cancer completed the Turkish version of the CSES, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and reported their depression and anxiety status as comorbid health conditions. Results: The results indicated a two-factor structure: a) positive core self-evaluation (PCSE) and b) negative core self-evaluation (NCSE). Significant moderate correlations were found for PCSE and NCSE with life satisfaction and perceived stress, and low to moderate correlations were found with depression and anxiety symptoms. Both of the factors had satisfactory internal consistency reliability. Limitations: This study used convenience sampling; therefore, the results should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the CSES can be used to assess core self-evaluations for people with cancer in Turkey.
