- Abstract
This article examines William Blake's series "Head of Poets" portraits that were commissioned by friend and patron William Hayley. Though Blake had little personal feelings towards many of the poets, one who did pique his interest was William Cowper, who was Hayley's late friend. Blake included in all the paintings smaller designs, most of which can be attributed to the pictured poet's works, but scholars have been puzzling over the designs in Cowper's picture, especially the dog that Blake painted.
