- Abstract
The article reports on the ten public health achievements that helped improve the health status of residents in the U.S. from 2001 to 2010. The introduction of new vaccines brought the number of diseases aimed by the U.S. immunization policy to 17 including the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, rotavirus vaccine and herpes zoster vaccine. Tobacco use was reduced from 23.5% to 20.6% of adult smokers and from 34.8% to 19.5% of youth smokers. Likewise, there was a 36% reduction of infants born with neural tube defects (NTD) from 1996 to 2006.
