- Title
Toward an Integration of Alternative Work.
- Authors
Hammer, Leslie B.; Barbera, Karen M.
- Abstract
Since the late 1970s, there has been a growing trend in the number of alternative work schedules being implemented in U.S. organizations (Olmsted & Smith, 1989). Alternative work schedules have, however, been implemented without consideration of how they affect other systems within an organization. Although research has focused on the effects of these schedules on various individual and organizational outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction, absenteeism), no systematic research has examined the effects of alternative work schedules within the human resource system. Selected literature on part-time work, job sharing, flexible work hours, and compressed work weeks is reviewed within the framework of such human resource subsystems as job analysis, recruitment, selection, training, performance appraisal, and promotions.
