- Abstract
This paper presents a laboratory scale study of the hydrometallurgical conversion of a mixed low-grade lead concentrate (19% Pb) consisting of galena and anglesite. For the conversion, different concentrations of sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate, temperature and reaction time were evaluated. The analysis of variance indicated that the variable with the greatest effect on conversion was temperature. The results showed a conversion of galena to sulfate greater than 90% in 1 hr. The reaction follows the shrinking core model, where the reaction is limited by a mixed control, with a greater emphasis on the chemical reaction. This work also shows that once sulfide (galena) is converted to sulfate, and it can easily be converted to carbonate (100%, 1 hr), like the anglesite. The results are interesting because show another hydrometallurgical alternative for mixed lead concentrates.
