- Abstract
Melanocortins are peptide hormones derived from pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). They have an important role in regulating melanocyte pigmentation. They also play a part in a wide variety of physiological processes including enhancement of learning and memory and thermoregulation. They mediate their effects through G-protein coupled receptors by stimulating adenylate cyclase. These receptors show a diversity of subtypes though they all belong to the same super-family.
