- Abstract
NF-&b.kappa;B is composed of hetero- or homodimers of Rel family proteins and is involved in inflammatory response, growth control, and cell death. In unstimulated cells, NF-&b.kappa;B is sequestered in the cytoplasm as a complex with inhibitory proteins called I&b.kappa;Bs. Various stimuli activating NF-&b.kappa;B result in phosphorylation of two serines at the N-terminus of I&b.kappa;Bα and I&b.kappa;BΒ and subsequent degradation of them, resulting in translocation of NF-&b.kappa;B into the nucleus and activation of target genes. A previous study showed that the I&b.kappa;B kinase forms a large complex with a molecular mass of 700 kDa.
