Abstract
The article reports on the lack of modernization within the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. According to the author, the lack of innovation is due in part to a business model which prioritizes the development of large volume drugs with revenues in excess of one billion U.S. dollars per year. He adds that one of the consequences is that the sector established a manufacturing capacity that is underused, with the excess capacity serving as barrier to the overhaul of the manufacturing base.
