- Abstract
The article discusses the current status of indices for measuring dental plaque. Gingivitis, which is prevalent in a large proportion of the child and adult populations, is an inflammatory lesion of gingival tissues. Physician Sebastian G. Ciancio presented a comprehensive review of the development of clinical indices for the measurement of gingivitis. He included the criteria for the indices and their modifications, which have been reported for use in epidemiological studies as well as clinical trials of agents for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis. Gingival indices have, utilized an ordinal scale. The precision of a gingival index is related to the scale of the measurement, which is arbitrarily defined as a single scale point.
