Response to Carrington's "Merely Identity: Cultural Identity and the Politics of Sport.".
- Authors
Duncan, Margaret Carlisle
- Abstract
The article presents data previously gathered by the author to support the concept of identity politics defended by "Merely Identity: Cultural Identity and the Politics of Sport," by Ben Carrington. It notes individuals live in the junction of many different identities, race, gender, class, nationality, and so on. Research showing white and African-American women have different body type ideals is cited in support. The ongoing controversy over Title IX programs mandating equal athletic opportunities for men and women in colleges is presented as further evidence, as are disparities between treatment of the sexes in primary and secondary school physical education.
