HARRIET BEECHER STOWE'S WOMAN IN SACRED HISTORY: BIBLICAL CRITICISM, EVOLUTION, AND THE MATERNAL ETHIC.
- Authors
Nichols, Anne
- Abstract
In Woman in Sacred History, Harriet Beecher Stowe deviates from her normal genre of religious fiction and focuses directly on biblical interpretation. Stowe uses new historical criticism and scientific evolutionary theories to argue that all of God's laws are based on a maternal ethic. Ultimately, Stowe laid a foundation for future feminist theologians by granting biblical and contemporary women more agency than had been traditionally accorded to them. This essay focuses on Stowe's analysis of Sarah and Hagar, Miriam and Moses, and Mary the mother of Jesus.
