- Title
Leveraging the Digital Media Habits of the Millennials: Strategies for Teaching Journalism Courses.
- Authors
Schwalbe, Carol B.
- Abstract
Born between roughly 1982 and 2002, the Millennials are the first generation to grow up with cell phones, personal computers, camcorders, digital music players, and the World Wide Web. Understanding how they use digital media can help journalism educators teach them and prepare them for jobs in a global information society. A survey of 1,584 students at a large metropolitan university in the Southwest shows that these 18-to-24-year-olds are always on, always connected news grazers who lead intensely social lives. This study suggests strategies for teaching traditional skills and concepts by leveraging their digital media habits.
