- Abstract
Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) was synthesized using sol gel technique with calcium and phosphorus precursors. Surface of synthesized n-HA was modified using bisphosphonate group grafting in aqueous solution of 0.1M etidronic acid at a pH 10. The modified nano hydroxyapatite was further subjected to sintering at various temperatures i.e. 60, 400, 600, 800oC to obtain different crystallite sizes. Modified Hydroxyapatite was characterized using FTIR, WDXRF, TEM, SEM, DLS and Contact angle. Crystallite size was determined using XRD and DLS. FTIR and WD-XRF revealed that modification did not affect the pristine structure and the stoichiometry of Ca/P of hydroxyapatite. Further, FTIR results confirmed the presence of etidronate fragment bounded to the Hydroxyapatite structure. Morphology of hydroxyapatite changed from cylindrical/grain to sheet and needle with increase in sintering temperature as rendered by TEM and SEM. Contact angle revealed modified hydroxyapatite possess super hygroscopic surface.
