- Abstract
The cytotoxic effect of aqueous extract of pollen part of Typha domingensis, a traditional plant that is widely available in the south of Iraq, was evaluated in vitro on two breast cancer cell lines. The aqueous phase of pollen of Typha domingensis was extracted by the percolation method. Two adenocarcinoma cell lines were used in this study (MCF7 and MDAMB231). 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test was used to evaluate toxicity after 24 hours incubation. Exposure for 24 hours indicated that both cell lines did not achieve 50% reduction in viability even at a higher dose of the extract (1000μg/ml). However, MCF7 [estrogen receptor + (ER+)] cells showed a trend of sensitivity and confirmed with morphological, change, which was more obvious than MDA-MB231[estrogen receptor - (ER-)]. In conclusion, taken together, ER+ breast carcinoma cells may benefit from aqueous extract of Typha domingensis and further studies are required.
