- Abstract
Introduction: Tattooing simply involves insertion of various colored pigments into the skin's underlying dermis. Tattoos are used to represent various cultures, to commemorate a special life event, to express affection to important people, and to show self-identification. It has been found that people with multiple tattoos can handle stress better, have higher cortisol and immunoglobulin A levels. The aim of this survey was to create awareness about the beneficiary and side effects of tattoos and also to study the perception about tattoos. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 134 students of the age group of 17-22 years. The students were both from professional and vocational streams. The questionnaire contained 15 questions which assessed the awareness about the benefits and side effects of tattoos and tried assessing the perception people held about tattooed people when compared to normal people. The survey was conducted online, and the results were interpreted using proper statistical analysis tools. Results: The surveys main goal is to understand the view that people hold toward tattooed people. Almost 42% of the sample responded that they would not feel uncomfortable if a tattooed person serves them in a public place. Almost 75% of the sample space responded that they would not judge a tattooed person differently when compared to a non-tattooed person. Almost 77% of the sample population was not sure about the health risks related to the art of tattooing. Almost 80% of the population responded that they were not aware that multiple tattoos can strengthen the immune system. Conclusion: Most of the adolescent populations were not quite aware of the health risks linked toward faulty tattooing, and most of the population's perceptions were quite positive toward tattooed people.
