- Abstract
Several female-dominated service professions are seen to be less »technical« when being compared to traditionally male occupations. This article tells a different story about the professional routines of service workers in the retail sector (one example for undervalued, low-wage female-dominated occupations), as this demonstrates the significant ways in which digitization has transformed their work practices as well. The presented study was motivated by the feminist aim to uncover their »hidden« technological labour. Indeed, an analysis of the gathered empirical data highlights a vast range of (often hidden) high-tech working tools, the (often underrated) technical competences that workers need to employ, as well as the substantial extent of (often invisible) technological work in this sector. Based on these findings, the article carves out three »hiding mechanisms« and discusses potentials for intervention to enhance the status of female-dominated service professions. It thereby offers an untypical contribution to the debate around the digital transformation of work, in that it addresses pressing questions of equity.
