- Abstract
The article discusses job aspirations and expectations, using the example of job-seeking men and women re-entering the labour market. Thereby reference is made to the work of Marie Jahoda and her well-known differentiation between manifest and latent functions of employment. The empiri)cal analysis is based on 20 problem-centred interviews conducted with job seekers in Upper Aus)tria. These interviews were part of a larger project realized cooperatively by the Institute of Socio)logy at Johannes Kepler University Linz and the Institute for Vocational and Adult Education (Linz), and was funded by the Anniversary Fund of the Austrian National Bank. Concerning future jobs, the job seekers, who were interviewed, articulated predominantly wishes and aspirations in re)lation to the manifest economic function of earning an income, to the temporal structure with the desire for a clearer distinction between paid and unpaid work on the one hand and leisure time on the other, as well as to the social need for a constructive cooperation in the workplace. First conclu)sions promoting the design of »good work« in the sense of Jahoda’s »humanization of work« can be derived from the article
