- Title
What Makes Something an Alternative Asset Class, Anyway?
- Authors
Kitces, Michael E.
- Abstract
The article discusses the definition of the alternative investment asset class. The author notes that one method of assessing an alternative asset is the correlation of its risk and return characteristics and other behaviors with that of other types of investments, but adds that correlations can be unstable in different market conditions or impacted by active asset management. Real estate and commodities are presented as examples of asset classes that behave in a unique manner to traditional investments. Other of types of investments evaluated include large and small capitalization stocks, hedge funds, and managed futures.
