- Abstract
Societal trends have influenced firms' engagement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. Leadership team composition and the local political environment may also be influential. Academic discussions involving how women lead, calls for gender equity in executive positions, and the current political environment contributed to the hypotheses formulated which predict an increase in female executive presence will lead to an increase in firms' positive CSR participation. Building upon institutional theory, it is proposed the institutional context also impacts CSR practices. This study makes a new contribution to the management literature with the examination of state-level political dominance (a proxy of the institutional environment) in both static and dynamic terms. The compounding effect of an increase in the presence of female executives and political party dominance are predicted to have a significant, incremental impact on firms' positive CSR engagement. Support for the hypotheses is found by testing 11 years of KLD data.
