- Abstract
Originating in the United States, private equity and its subset, venture capital, have widely spread into other developed countries, particularly in Europe, and more recently in emerging markets. Our objective is to analyze the diffusion of this form of financing in emerging countries by considering the practices of private equity firms. More precisely, we seek to answer the following question: do private equity firms in emerging countries behave in the same way as their counterparts in advanced countries? To do so, a case study of a leading private equity firm in South Africa was carried out. The practices of this fund management company are analyzed in comparison with the main characteristics of the American reference model. We found that a close similarity exists between both in terms of fundraising, assessment, investment or exit, while highlighting specificities related to the national context, in particular regarding black economic empowerment.
