Prevention of Necrotic Enteritis in Broiler Chickens by Prebiotics and Probiotics VS Control by Antibiotics, in Vivo Study.

- Abstract
Clostridium perfringens (C.perfringens) induced necrotic enteritis has become a worldwide significant problem in broiler chickens' industry. A total of 100 intestinal samples were collected from broiler chickens that demonstrated clinical manifestations and post mortem lesions of Necrotic Enteritis. Bacteriological examination of samples revealed that C.perfringens was isolated from (62/100) 62% of examined flocks. Screening of the circulating toxigenic subtypes by PCR revealed that 14/20 (70%) of studied isolates were positive for only cpa gene thus considered C.perfringens type A. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance patterns of isolates were demonstrated to lincomycin 51/62 (82.26%), ampicillin 45/62 (72.58%), nalidixic acid 43/62 (69.35%), and spectinomycin 43/62 (69.35%), respectively. Furthermore, 49/62 (79.03%) of isolates demonstrated multidrug resistance phenotypes. Experimental study revealed better performance indicators in C.perfringens challenged chickens fed on probiotic (Bacillus subtilis) and prebiotic (Mannan Oligosaccharides / MOS) compared to the challenged chickens treated with amoxicillin. In conclusion, the high prevalence of multidrug resistant C.perfringens isolated from broiler chickens, signified the importance of applying Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) surveillance in broiler chickens' production sector, and raised the need for capacity building and raising awareness of veterinarians on the proper use of antibiotics. Moreover, the promising results of NE control associated with feed supplementation by Bacillus subtilis and Mannan Oligosaccharides (MOS) represented an effective alternative to be used in conjunction with good management practices for prevention and control of NE rather than its control by antibiotics.
