- Abstract
The purpose of this descriptive study was to theoretically construct and test a five variable casual model of clinical judgment oí practicing nurses in Delta State of Nigeria. The research design as expo-facto research. Random sampling was used to select 486 practicing nurses Four instruments were used to measure the causal link; Bio data, California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI), California Thinking Skill Test (CCTST) and Clinical Judgment Appraisal Tool (CJAT). Descriptive, multiple regressions and path analytic statistical procedures were used to analyze the data. Age, nursing education, nursing practice, disposition towards critical thinking (DCTC) and critical thinking (CT) were hypothesized to influence clinical judgment Ten hypothesized paths were considered significant at P<0.05. Three independent variables (nursing education, disposition toward critical thinking and critical thinking) when taken together are effective in predicting clinical judgment of nurses with a variability of 18%. The proportion of the indirect effect of independent variable on dependent was 79% while the total indirect effect relationship accounted for 20%. There is a positive correlation between critical thinking and clinical judgment. Implication for nursing education and practice are provided.
