- Abstract
The importance of innovation and R&D activities has been increasing and making them one of the most significant key for firms to develop products and/or services which will help them differentiate themselves from their competitors and thereby playing a role in determining the rank of the countries in the world economy. Products, exported by countries which attach importance to innovation and R&D activities, have more added value. When considered in micro and macro scale, it is apparent that countries and firms which export added value products achieve higher export performance. The main and the secondary aim of this study are to investigate the effect of R&D and innovation activities on export performance through managerial perceptions and the relationship between innovation and R&D activities respectively. Analysis carried out with the data, which were collected by CATI method from 313 exporting firms operating in Turkey, reveals that there is a significant and strong relationship between innovation and R&D activities and these activities have positive effect on export performance perception. Findings also show that the most important activities with respect to R&D and innovation are the budgets allocated by firms for their R&D operations and the support they provide to develop a culture of learning to gain competitive advantage.
