- Abstract
One of the most important issues to be considered in terms of obtaining an ideal occlusion and aesthetic at the end of the orthodontic treatment is anchorage control. Various extraoral appliances are designed to provide anchorage control in the routine of orthodontic practices. Although these extraoral appliances are effective methods for anchorage control, requirement of patient's co-operation is the biggest disadvantage. A number of intraoral anchors (mini screw, on- plant, miniplate, graz implant etc.) have developed in recent years which do not require patient cooperation on anchorage control. Other factors for selection of proper mini screw are: many parameters that affect the primer stability of the mini screw, different opinions on the placement technique and loading time, possibility that the miniscrew can be placed in very different areas in the mouth and the bone density and soft tissue thickness in these areas varies. In many studies about miniscrews, different results have been reported with similar parameters. Therefore the clinician needs to think multidirectionally about selection of proper miniscrew with sufficient knowledge. Usage of miniscrew is becoming increasingly widespread in routine orthodontic applications due to easy placement and removal, low cost, possibility of immediate loading and high success rate. Because of the common usage of miniscrew, variety of miniscrew has increased and the increasing diversity has made it difficult to choose the proper screw. In this review, informations which facilitate the selection of the screws are presented under the titles of miniscrew's mechanical features, types, indications, factors to consider in screw selection, application areas and complications.
