- Abstract
Purpose: One of the important public health problems affecting maternal and child is postpartum depression. Its prevalence varies between 3.5% and 36% depending on the definition, evaluation criteria and geographical area. Risk factors for developing postpartum depression are stressful life events, lack of social support, marital problems, and history of previous depression, child care stress and maternty blues. The aim of this descriptive study was determined the prevalence of postpartum depression and factors related with postpartum depression in Sakarya. Method: This study is descriptive and cross-sectional. The Sample was selected from Sakarya [N:126]. In this study, the questionnaire included the demographic data; Symptom Check List-90 Revised [SCL 90-R], Beck Depression Inventory [BDI], and Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS] have been used. Findings: The incidence of postnatal depression was 23.8% in Sakarya. Correlations were found between postpartum depression and General Symptom Index, depressive symptoms. Discussion and Conclusion: Postpartum depression in women is an important public health problem. Therefore Health workers, especially nurses who work with mothers should be alert to the possibility of postpartum depression.
