- Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine levels and effecting factors of prenatal attachment, coping styles with stress and depressive symptoms of pregnant women. Methods: The research was conducted with 342 pregnant women applying to The Perinatology Department of Istanbul Medical School of Istanbul University between January and October, 2009. In accumulating data, Introduction Form of Pregnants, Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Ways of Coping with Stress Scale were used. Data were collected through face to face interview by researcher. This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. Results: 53,5 % of women's CES-D score was 16 or higher. Average of PAI score was 60,7±10,1. The mean of pregnant women's ways of coping with stress subscales were; submissive approach 1,0±0,5, helpless approach 1,1±0,5, self confident approach 2,0±0,5, optimistic approach 1,7±0,5, seeking for social support 1,9±0,6. Thirty five years old and above had lower PAI scores (p<0,05). PAI scores were lower (p<0,01) and CES-D scores were higher (p<0,001) in pregnant women graduated from elementary school and unemployed. Employed pregnant women were seeking for social support more than the others (p:0,000). Unemployed pregnant women were used more helpless (p<0,001) and submissive (p<0,001) coping style. Primiparous women (p<0,001) and women who have not got any child (p<0,001) had higher scores of PAI. Conclusion: Pregnant women who were became pregnant 35 years old and over, have lower levels of education, unemployed, having unplanned pregnancy and multiparous have lower prenatal attachment score. Pregnant women whose income less than expenses, who have lower levels of education and minded termination of pregnancy have more depressive symptoms and they use submissive and helpless approach with coping stress.
