- Abstract
Although coat of arms and other similar symbols pertained to different dynasties, states and religions, it is seen that distinct symbols and emblems have also appeared. Ottomans used sultan's signature as the official coat of arms in the first period when they did not indulge figurative portrayals. They arranged the official coat of arms with Western concept and introduced a multifactorial and symmetric composition in the late period. This composition started to be deformed in the time of Sultan Mahmud II and lost its originality in the time of Sultan Abdulhamid II. As Turkish Repuplic was established, the Ottoman Coat of Arms fell into abeyance jurally. The new state decided to hold a contest for "Turkish Republic Coat of Arms" through the instrumentality of the Board of Education. After the contest, the coat of arms designed by Namik Ismail was found successful but this coat of arms pattern was not accepted as the official coat of arms.
