- Abstract
In the future, the growing share of older people will represent a challenge for the health and social system. Elderly belong to the unprivileged group of the population. Due to psychophysical changes and chronic illnesses, they are more susceptible to injuries and other sudden disease conditions. At simultaneous significance to integrate elderly into society and risk-taking for injuries and diseases, first aid knowledge is important for the older population as well. Evaluations of first aid courses among younger generations in Slovenia show a positive attitude of the participants towards first aid training; the attitude of older generations has not been the object of research yet. The purpose of this research is to find out the state of supply and demand in the field of first aid training for older than sixty-one years. We have researched opinions of the elderly about first aid training in Slovenia and the first aid offer for the elderly in Europe as well. We used the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of scientific research work. We disovered that also the elderly want to learn or refresh first aid knowledge and that there is an urgent need for a systematic approach and order of that field. That gives an initiative for establishing a new first aid programme, adjusted to the elderly. Unfortunately, we have not succeeded to gain this programme through the analysis of European first aid courses. First aid training for the elderly also means their integration in social activities and thus the realisation of intergenerational cooperation in building up the health of entire society.
