- Abstract
This article discusses the case of a father and his twin daughters who were diagnosed with selective lactase deficiency. Their gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Particular focus is given to the results of their laboratory tests and upper GI endoscopies with duodenal biopsies. Also included are information on the prevalence of decreased lactase activity and GI diseases associated with secondary lactose intolerance. Treatment options for lactose intolerance are lactose avoidance, substitution of nutrients found in dairy, and enzyme substitution. It notes the availability of enzymatic lactase supplements for those cases in which lactose avoidance is impossible or difficult.
