- Abstract
This article investigates the impact of cosmetic procedures within an international healthcare crisis context. Demand for cosmetic procedures has been increasing worldwide and breast augmentation is a very common cosmetic procedure. Research into the psychological aspects of cosmetic procedures is limited and not sufficiently conclusive to inform policy and care. The psychosocial impact in complications is even more insufficiently understood, especially so within a healthcare crisis, such as in the PIP crisis. In this study, mixed methods were utilised. Out of 800 women who had breast implants, 110 responded to an online survey in 2012. IPA was used to explore the perceived impact via open-ended questions. Quality of life was measured using EuroQoL EQ-5D-3L. Psychological morbidities identified included anxiety, anger, shame, personal disgust, and mistrust. Objectively measured QoL was above average. Intention for future surgery appeared largely unaffected. Many women reported serious psychological challenges, which they linked to PIP implants. These are indicative of postoperative support needs, as well as the need for screening to prevent serious psychological morbidity and psychosocial impact. The importance of revisiting policy regarding psychosocial assessment prior to cosmetic procedures on the NHS and the independent sectors is highlighted. The importance of appropriate training for healthcare professionals to respond efficiently to the needs of patients who seek such procedures, or who are dealing with complications is stressed, as is the importance of psychological input in order to prevent or manage psychosocial morbidity.
