- Abstract
Anxiety disorders belong to group with the highest prevalence among all psychiatric disorders while the range of 1-year prevalence of anxiety disorders, according to data from World Health Organization occurs from 2.4% in Shanghai to 18.2% in the United States. The goal of this study was to analyze the frequency of anxiety disorders at the Day Hospital Department of the Psychiatric Clinic, Clinical Center University of Sarajevo (CCUS) and examine socio-demographic profile of the patients. The study included 230 patients with different diagnoses, who were hospitalized at the Day Hospital of Psychiatric Clinic CCUS in the period from January 1st 2011 -- December 31st 2011. Respondents were randomly selected and interviewed using the Structured Clinical Questionnaire (SCID) for the diagnosis according to DSM-IV. Of the total, 71 respondents with anxiety disorders were identified. Symptoms of anxiety were assessed by the Beck Anxiety Inventory scale with 21 items. The study was retrospective, clinical and epidemiological. From the total number of patients (230) we determined that 71 (30.9%) patients have anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders were more frequent among women (61.2%) and the average age of patients with anxiety disorders was 50 ± 9.5 years (range 22-65 years). The least common category of patients with anxiety disorders included retired persons and respondents with university education, while the average length of hospitalization for this group of patients was 46.2±10.5 days. Conclusion: Numerous epidemiological and clinical researches in the general population indicate that anxiety disorders are rarely treated. Although the prevalence of anxiety disorders, as well as the lack of use of health services is well-known, the content and quality of certain therapeutic proce procedures are less known. Effective assessment, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment can lead to better treatment outcomes in primary health care and improve their quality of life.
