- Authors
Perkins-Dock, Robin E.
- Abstract
Adlerian family therapy provides a belief system, framework, and a rationale for behavior that encompasses the sociocultural factors necessary to understand African American clients, their historical and current experiences of racial prejudice and oppression, and their family networks. The author examines the application of Adlerian family therapy with African American families. Demographic, cultural, and therapeutic characteristics of African American families are described as they relate to the aspects of Adlerian family therapy that contribute to its usefulness with this population. In conclusion, a case example is presented in which Adlerian family therapy is used with an African American family.
