- Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the attitudes and perceptions among CLS/CLT program directors and clinical laboratory managers in comparison to 1-2 year post education professionals and 4- 10 year post education professionals on a career in the clinical laboratory. This study used a focus group and key informant interviews to gather information. Generally, the young professionals were satisfied with the career, but the mid-career professionals felt the career was a dead end and had no career ladder; this is also the observation of the CLS/CLT program directors and clinical laboratory managers. The two factors cited most for remaining in the profession were salary and growth opportunities. The mid-career professionals had a much more negative outlook on the profession (low salary, no visible career ladder, lack of respect from other health care professionals) and only 15 percent plan to be in the field within the next five years. If this trend holds, then the CLS/CLT profession will be losing veterans at a much higher rate than the projections would indicate. Laboratory managers will need to be proactive in the development of career ladders and lobbying for higher salaries for their staff.
