- Abstract
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience challenges in engaging socially and being aware of their emotions, which affects their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The revised HRQOL framework of Ferrans et al. (2005) posits that individual and environmental characteristics affect a person's HRQOL. It is concerned with how the environment, such as activities outside home, affect the relationship between individual characteristics and HRQOL. Employing a cross-sectional predictive study design with mediation analysis, this study aimed to determine whether community participation mediated between trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and HRQOL in a sample of 140 adults with high-functioning autism in Metro Manila, selected through non-probability purposive sampling. The survey instruments consisted of Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire scales--Short Form (TEIQueSF), The Guernsey Community Participation and Leisure Assessment--Revised (GCPLA-R), and SF-36 Health Survey. Test scores showed moderate levels of TEI and HRQOL and low levels of community participation among the participants. Furthermore, TEI and community participation both predicted HRQOL. Community participation partially mediated the overall relationship between TEI and HRQOL. The data are a relevant input in designing programs for individuals with ASD to help them achieve a better quality of life.
