- Abstract
Corruption is one of the major problems of modern police agencies as well as of state institutions in general. Despite the disagreements on the definition of corruption, concrete evidence, such as bribes, biased testimonies, gratuities to the bureaucrats, and so on, are usually the starting point. The current research is a case study from the Turkish National Police in 1997 regarding a corruption scandal that occurred involving a parliament member, a mafia leader, and a police chief. The government reaction to the corruption case, specifically the rotation of police officers, seemed to have a significant impact on reducing corruption. This study presents an extensive theoretical background of corruption as well as the potential policy implications for the case discussed herein.
