- Abstract
Increased visceral perception is one of the hallmarks of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). So far, pharmacologic treatment of IBS has been disappointing. Complementary or alternative concepts to treat IBS are highly needed in order to offer a large population effective and safe treatment. The concept of the 'microbegut-brain axis' provides a new avenue for understanding the pathophysiology of IBS as well as for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. The administration of probiotics fits obviously well in this strategy. This review describes the relation between IBS and the microbe-gut-brain axis and discusses how probiotics can affect microbe-gut-brain signalling and alleviate the symptoms and complaints of IBS, a disorder affecting a large proportion of the general population.
