- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Assessing and meeting the needs of the mentally ill as well as the way these needs are related to the quality of life, contribute to improved mental health care services. OBJECTIVE: Investigating the degree of correlation between needs, as measured by the Camberwell Assessment of Need tool, and the quality of life of mentally ill. METHOD: A systematic review of the research literature was applied. Relevant articles were searched in the databases PUBMED, CINAHL and COCHRANE. Studies included were published from 01/01/2000 until 31/07/2018, in which the participants were psychiatric patients 18- 65 years. Were also included studies using the Camberwell Assessment of Need as a needs assessment tool, since it is the only tool whose reliability and validity have been adequately documented through international studies. Studies involving subjects with substance use diagnosis, learning disabilities, dementia or other organic psycho-syndromes, homeless or imprisoned were excluded. Were also excluded studies that did not investigate the two key variables, and in particular their degree of correlation. RESULTS: 9 quantitative studies were included. 2 of them were cross-sectional, 6 longitudinal studies and one randomized controlled trial with prospective design, with intervention group and control group. In most studies, moderate to strong correlations were found between the number of unmet needs and quality of life. The level of self-reported quality of life could be predicted over time by the number of unmet needs, mainly in the social field. CONCLUSIONS: Satisfying mainly social needs, in addition to reducing psychiatric symptoms, seems to be of particular importance in ensuring a better quality of life for people with mental disorders. Needs assessment will contribute in the development of appropriate interventions to meet the needs of patients with mental illness, as well as to improve their quality of life.
