- Abstract
In Bogotá, Colombia, there are more than 200 tanneries that include the use of sodium sulfide, considered to be a water pollutant, caused by the wastewater. In this work, the adsorption capacity of sulfides on activated carbon obtained from corn cob was analyzed, in order to determine the possible application of this agricultural waste material for the control of water pollution. The activated carbon was obtained thermally in a percentage of 5.5% by mass and for the adsorption study the effect of the initial pH of the aqueous solution, the initial concentration of the sulfur and the contact time on the percentage of reduction of sulfur in water were analyzed. A maximum sulfide retention capacity of 22.2 mg / g, and a maximum sulfide concentration reduction of 98.96% were presented for an initial concentration of 100 mg / L of sulfide in solution. The experimental equilibrium of the process was represented by the Langmuir isotherm model and the kinetic trend of the operation by the pseudo second order model. It was found that the retention of sulfides in activated carbon is effective at a pH lower than 11.
