- Abstract
Appropriate kenaf variety for a specific sowing date is still challenging in Erbil. This study aimed to determine the response of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) varieties to sowing dates in Erbil, Kurdistan Region. Seeds of two kenaf varieties FH 952 and HC2, (V1 and V2) were selected and planted on two sowing dates: 14th April 2021 and 14th June 2021 (S1 and S2). Growth and yield characteristics were measured for both varieties. The growth characteristics determined include plant height and stem diameter, while yield characteristics were fresh and dry total stem yield, core yield, and bast yield. The best result was obtained for variety V2 and sowing date S1. While the plant height of variety V1 was greater than that of variety V2, the mean values of stem diameter, total stem yield, core yield, and bast yield of variety V2 were significantly higher than those of variety V1. The sowing date, S1, appeared to have better growth and yield characteristics for kenaf compared to S2. Therefore, the variety V2 and sowing date S1 were suggested for better kenaf cultivation in Erbil.
