- Abstract
The municipality of Amsterdam aims to enhance resident's influence on public policy through participation. Earlier research points out differences in voting turnout between neighbourhoods in the city. Especially young people that live in neighbourhoods at the outskirts of the city are underrepresented at elections and therefore in the formal political domain. In this research, participatory encounters between youngsters (16-27) and municipal administrators, were observed and analysed. The aim was to find to what extend these encounters contribute to the influence of these youngsters on policymaking. The study showed that there is insufficient room for youngsters' opinions in these encounters, resulting in disappointment. Young residents are often asked to participate in spaces and interactions which do not align with their lifeworld. Furthermore, their interlocutors seem unaware of their adult influence. Solutions can be found in increased ownership for youngsters, professionals showing solidarity with youngsters, and more awareness of power imbalances on the side of municipal administrators.
