- Abstract
Low back pain (LBP) is a major health problem in modern society. The most common form of LBP is non-specific in origin. This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of massage therapy with black pepper oil that possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties on the pain perception of patients with non-specific LBP (NSLBP). In a cross-sectional study, 30 female participants (23.4 ± 2.42 years; BMI: 22.86 ± 1.73 kg.m-2) who clinically reported to be suffering from NSLBP for more than six months were recruited and randomly assigned into three groups: massage therapy (MTG), massage therapy with black pepper oil (MTPG) and control (CG). The MTG and MTPG groups underwent the massage therapy program with or without black paper oil three times weekly at 20 min per session for six weeks. The pain perception was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). A one-way ANOVA statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the pain perception of MTG and MTPG when compared with CG after six weeks [F (2, 27) = 10.38, p < 0.001]. Meanwhile, both intervention groups showed a significant effect in pain perception (p < 0.001) with the CG group but there was no significant difference between MTG and MTPG in terms of the improvement of pain perception (p = 0.066). Despite the lack of significant differences between MTG and MTPG, both groups led to a reduced pain perception with MTPG showing slightly greater improvement. In conclusion, intervention programs that included massage therapy with and without black paper oil displayed great improvement in pain perception among female who suffered from NSLBP.
