- Abstract
This article describes a project that models the collaboration between general and special education faculty members, the community, and pre-service teachers and at the same time was a direct example of linking research and reality through evidence-based practice. The project consisted of a collaborative initiative between a university and community preschool that focused on the implementation of universally designed STEM units in a preschool classroom serving at-risk students. Research on universal design for learning, collaboration, and STEM was used as the theoretical background. The project conceptualization, collaborative nature, and implementation are all discussed. Successful collaboration occurred during the project because of the presence of key collaborative dispositions that included trust, flexibility, and respectful interactions. Other factors contributing to the success of the project were effective communication, common planning time, and the integration of technology.
