- Abstract
Purpose: In this paper we discuss the import trade-foreign-direct-investment (FDI) linkages based on different industries between China and the Indochina Peninsula countries. Design/methodology/approach: We will use panel data to analyze the import trade effects of FDI, and classify the imported goods into resource-intensive, capital-intensive, and laborintensive, and then operationalize full-sample and sub-sample models for analysis. Findings: The results showed that the import trade effects of China's investment in the Indochina Peninsula countries are heterogeneous in different industries. The impact of FDI flows on import trade is more significant than stock, and the relationship between FDI and imports in resource-intensive and capital-intensive industries in Indochina Peninsula countries is complementary, while the relationship in labor-intensive industries is not significant. Practical implications: The relationship between import trade and FDI is revealed. In addition, the import trade effect of China's direct investment in Indochina Peninsula countries is also influenced by factors such as foreign trade dependence, human capital, natural resource endowment, and domestic policy environment. Originality/value: This paper analyzes China's import trade effects in the Indochina Peninsula from the micro perspective of industry segmentation, and concludes that the import trade effects are heterogeneous among different industries, and there are also differences between short-term and long-term, which would broaden the research perspective about import trade-FDI issues, and provide references for China's FDI in Indochina Peninsula countries.
