- Abstract
Relapsing polychondritis is a very rare systemic disease, immune mediated, characterised by recurrent episodes of inflammation of cartilaginous tissues and proteoglycan rich tissues. The most frequent manifestations of the disease are chondritis of both auricles, nasal chondritis and seronegative polyarthritis, but any cartilge may be involved. The onset with nonspecific symptoms and with the pleomorphism of lesions usually delays the diagnosis. Recurrent inflammmatory episodes lead to the remodelling and destructions of the cartilages, with estetic, but most important with functional implications. Early diagnosis is critical for the initiation of correct treatment and for the prevention of complications.
