- Abstract
The aim of this study was to present epidemiological indicators of NI in PICU and to investigate any relationship between extrinsic risk factors and the appearance of NI. Out of 484 patients who were admitted to PICU, 405 and 79 patients were nonsurgical and surgical, respectively. 42 patients had one episode of NI and five had two episodes (with a total number of 52). 19 surgery patients and 33 nonsurgical patients contracted NI. The incidence rate during the study period was 10.5 per cent. NI were most encountered in the urinary and respiratory tracts, and the bloodstream, at a rate of 4%, 3%, 1.4% respectively. The aetiological profile was gram negative (71.15%), gram positive (23.1%), fungi 5.75%. NI was influenced by patient in-hospital duration.
