- Abstract
This study assessed the air pollution tolerance index of trees in selected urban areas and its fringes. The air pollution tolerance index of the trees in selected areas was assessed using these parameters: relative leaf water content, total chlorophyll content, leaf extract pH, and ascorbic acid content. A total of 27 trees were assessed for their tolerance index to air pollution. More trees were assessed to be sensitive in urban areas of Metro Manila, whereas more trees were assessed to be tolerant in the fringes of Metro Manila to air pollution. Trees in both the urban center and its peripheral areas showed differing tolerances to air pollution. Only Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth. showed high APTI in both study areas, indicating that the tree species was tolerant to air pollution. Planting of more tolerant trees in urban areas can help alleviate the problem of air pollution in urban areas.
